More and more stringent emission and fuel consumption regulations are pushing the automotive industry towards electrified powertrain and electrified vehicles. This is particularly evident in China, where there is an increased demand for electric (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). Infrastructure is being built across the country for convenient charging. It must now be determined how to meet the technical targets for EV/HEV regulations under economic constraints and how to best develop the major ePowertrain components (battery and motor). This course will discuss those questions and address the increasing need to understand practical EV/HEV development.

Attendees will be provided with the insight needed to develop EVs and HEVs while considering both economic and technical factors. The major components of electrified vehicles (battery and motor) will be discussed in detail. The course begins with reviewing three practical electrified vehicles (Corolla, Prius HEV, and RAV4 EV) and then proceeds on to EV/HEV design and components (motor and battery) development. It addresses the methodology, measuring standard, cost and function objectives in EV/HEV development. The course introduces the charging system and finishes with the market prospects of EV. All of the design concepts and practical applications discussed in the course are covered through case problems, examples, and demonstrations.

Who Should Attend
This seminar is intended for anyone not familiar with EV/HEV development and research areas. As the material covered targets a number of technical disciplines, attendees should have a minimum of two years’ experience in EV/HEV development engineering or a B.S. in mechanical, electrical/electronic, or automotive engineering. Additionally, basic technical knowledge in the areas of engines, transmissions, motors, batteries, and electronic control systems is highly recommended.

Instructor(s): Yuxiang Jiang, Ph.D.
Mr. Jiang is the Head of Integration Management at FCA APAC Powertrain. Prior to this, Mr. Jiang was the Chief Engineer-Powertrain at the Commercial Vehicle Technical Center of SAIC Motor Corporation Limited. He was also Chief Engineer in the Engine Tech Center at Foton Motor Company Research Institute. Mr. Jiang previously held the position of Project Manager-Powertrain Control and Advanced Engineering at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan. Additionally, he was Project Manager in the Powertrain Control Center at General Motors Corporation at the Milford Proving Grounds in Michigan. Mr. Jiang received his B.S. and M.S. in Thermal-Automotive Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois. In addition Mr. Jiang holds an M.B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Michigan.
