Seminars

SAE seminars are one to three-day short courses on a broad range of topics that address relevant technologies, engineering tools, and management techniques. All seminars are applications-oriented and emphasize an interactive, hands-on style to provide direct job-relevance.

Engineers teaching engineers is another key attribute of SAE Seminars. Whether they're practicing engineers, retired engineers, or university faculty, all instructors come to the classroom with content expertise, industry experience, and on-the-job know how.

You will also network with peers from leading companies in the United States and in many cases, from around the world. All courses include an extensive learning manual of slide reprints and course notes

All seminars are approved for IACET Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and for the professional engineer, Professional Development Hours (PDHs). Certain seminars are approved for Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR) Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Training / Education Classroom Seminars
On-board diagnosis of engine and transmission systems has been mandated by government regulation for light and medium vehicles since the 1996 model year. The regulations specify many of the detailed features that on-board diagnostics must exhibit. In addition, the penalties for not meeting the requirements or providing in-field remedies can be very expensive. This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of how and why OBD systems function and the technical features that a diagnostic should have in order to ensure compliant and successful implementation.

With the increase in vehicle electronics, the need to gather data from the vehicle has never been greater. From vehicle development, through vehicle test to vehicle validation, engineers are required to collect data from the vehicle's network. The SAE J2534-1 API (Recommended Practice for Pass-Thru Vehicle Programming) gives engineers the tool to collect vehicle data from multiple network types including CAN, ISO15765, J1850, ISO9141 and Chrysler SCI, using standard J2534 interface devices. In addition, the aftermarket can access the vehicle's OBDII information from the diagnostic connector.

Vehicle functional requirements, emission regulations, and thermal limits all have a direct impact on the design of a powertrain cooling airflow system. Given the expected increase in emission-related heat rejection, suppliers and vehicle manufacturers must work together as partners in the design, selection, and packaging of cooling system components. An understanding and appreciation of airflow integration issues and vehicle-level trade-offs that effect system performance are important to the team effort. The severe duty cycles, minimal ram air, and sometimes unconventional package layouts present unique challenges.

This seminar covers the five types of FMEAs with emphasis on constructing Design and Process FMEAs. Each column of the FMEA document will be clearly explained using an actual FMEA example. Throughout the class, participants will be involved in exercises/actual projects that demonstrate and incorporate direct application of learned principles.

This 4 hour short course offers an overview of aircraft hydraulic pumps focusing on their application in hydraulic systems, design and performance characteristics, and integration issues. These topics will examine the various pump technologies available for aircraft system applications, their design, performance and operational characteristics and limitations, and discuss the challenges and lessons learned in the integration of pumps in hydraulic systems.

Most muffler design in the automotive industry is accomplished by using "cut-and-try" methods that rely on what has worked in the past and/or extensive full-scale testing on engines for validation. New computer software aimed at muffler design can shorten the design cycle and yield more effective results. This four hour seminar provides an introduction to the behavior of mufflers and silencers including a description of the two-port approach to muffler design. This seminar covers the acoustic simulation of muffler and silencer systems and the use of experimental methods to measure muffler performance.

**Delivery Language is English unless noted above in the 'Delivered In' column.** In the aerospace industry, delegated product release is a process whereby a supplier has been provided the authority to act on behalf of a delegating organization to verify and release products without additional oversight from that delegating organization. Currently, each of these delegating organizations manages and conducts a unique training program for individuals responsible for their product release overcheck process. For suppliers producing products for multiple delegating organizations, each must then manage the multiple training requirements.

This course is offered in China only. More and more stringent emission and fuel consumption regulations are pushing the automotive industry towards electrified powertrain and electrified vehicles. This is particularly evident in China, where there is an increased demand for electric (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). Infrastructure is being built across the country for convenient charging. It must now be determined how to meet the technical targets for EV/HEV regulations under economic constraints and how to best develop the major ePowertrain components (battery and motor).

Utilizing the expertise of world-renowned GD&T expert Alex Krulikowski, this course offers an explanation of the geometric symbols, rules, and concepts, the datum system, and how to inspect GD&T requirements using tools from the four categories of inspection tools (CMM; comparison instruments and fixed gages; hand tools and open set up; and production gaging systems). It also includes a comparison of GD&T to coordinate tolerancing; an explanation of tolerance zones; Rules #1 and #2; form and orientation controls; tolerance of position; runout and profile controls.
